Generally, I find it incredibly distasteful to write a fiction in which the oppressors are now oppressed as if it was only the flip of a coin that created the power imbalance and as if it were not something that were still going on today.
It’s like this time my dad made me watch this episode of Star Trek: Enterprise where they land on a world where women are dominant and the men are so “oppressed” by them, i.e. they are made to wear revealing clothing and aren’t allowed into the political sphere. It’s projection at it’s finest, really. The oppressors who control the media, write a fiction about the oppressed group being the ones with power and how they would do just the same as them, which has no basis in fact.
Now there is this recently published novel, Revealing Eden, where white people are a hated minority and are called “Pearls.” Black people are the oppressors yet call themselves “Coal.” Do I really need to go any further with that?
The blatant racism is disgusting, aside from that, the fact that there is no need to write a “what if?” about racism when it is still such a prevalent part of our culture. The author thinks that this some kind of insightful analysis that will change the way people [read: white people] see racism. If the only way to get white people to care about racism is writing a book on reverse racism then please just shoot me now.
