Okay so the Hawkeye Initiative is wonderful, great, and empowering with a side of hilarious. I think it’s fantastic. Girl Nerds are finally getting their foot in the door and taking their share of the pie from this male dominated industry. Really it’s great and honestly, it’s about fucking time someone acknowledged the huge gap in a male nerd’s views of “Fake Nerd Girl”.
But…am I the only one who feels a bit sullied and unusual at the fact that most of the people getting recognition for this are White Females while POC(I hate that phrase btw but I’ll use it so all of you won’t jump on me at once - again) Gamers, male and female, are still left in the dark. We’re still considered “not real nerds”. Yes, even to Girl Gamers.
For instance, Luke Cage: Power Man didn’t even make it into the Avengers Movie. He had, what I’d like to believe as a brief cameo in Thor along with Hiemdoll that’s about a Black as the Marvel movies got. “Well, Whedon’s always had a problem with….blah blah blah…” I don’t care about that. Even on Tumblr, everyone loves the Black Widow, and that’s awesome. She was badass but Fury is reduced to…what…a nanny? Everyone gets a special gifset about how awesome they were and Fury gets “and I swear in that moment we were motherfuckers” and an admittedly adorable comic about waking up the Avengers. Complete with pink apron. Even, “Hawkeye wasn’t useless, Fury was the useless one”. See what I mean?
Let me break it down even more. There at least three posts on how amazing Charlotte is in Princess in the Frog and how her friendship with Tiana was soooooo different and soooo sweet and it was Charlotte who really made the movie as great as it was. But the only post I’ve seen about Tiana is a picture of six different races in six different Disney movies where one isn’t labeled right and the other isn’t even real, and saying that those six characters out of fifty years of movies should’ve been enough. They even tried to justify it with Ariel and Eric’s relatioship, like “oh they aren’t even the same species look at that”. What?
Even further, tumblr continues to make joke posts making fun of people who wanted more diversity in Brave. “But it’s medieval Scotland! There weren’t exactly a lot of Black People!” Yeah well, I’m sure there weren’t a lot of PEOPLE TURNING INTO MAGICAL BEARS either but they managed to get that into the film, they could manage at least one dark-skinned person.
There’s even a post expressing surprise at Black people trading Yu-Gi-Oh cards after the poster assumed it was going to be a drug deal.
And don’t even get me started on the mounds of hate toward Doctor Who’s Martha Jones. Just….don’t.
While the progress that’s going on his great, I personally love the Superladies group pinup shot replaces with the Avengers. Carried away, my ass. I love, love, looooooooove it. But like a lot of social movements on this website, I felt like I was on the outside looking in. And yeah, I get that most of the characters that are being replaces with Hawkeye are, in fact white, and comics in general, especially lately, can be a bit strapped as far as racial diversity goes. But…no one seems to care about that part. And don’t tell me “well sometimes that’s the way it is” because you and I both know that that argument is bullshit.
So I know I got a bit long winded, but I just needed to put things into perspective. As an African American, or POC since saying a particular race seems to offend certain people, I’m just watching all of this progress go by and get further and further away from us. Oh, okay we’ll just wait here. Maybe if we wait five to ten years things like Blacknanimated or cosplayingwhileblack will get noticed too.
Anyways that’s my 2…more like 25…cents. I know no one’s been overtly racist and no one’s doing it on purpose. I’m not blaming anyone. It just sucks to feel left out, you know?
