Ask Me   Artist Mae Lee | 24 | Asian American
Blog | Facebook | Twitter | Website

A struggling artist trying to make it. Sometimes I'll indulge in fandom amidst artwork postings and sketches. Actually most of the time. Also, I apparently have a lot of feelings about racism and sexism.

Current shows I'm watching are Nikita, Hawaii Five-O, The Walking Dead, Elementary, probably more to come as long as people of color are represented.

Anti white washing, anti white privilege, anti racism, anti sexism, anti all other isms...people just need to be decent people.

: How to Fall in Love: A Letter to All My Brown Girls Waiting for Men Who Never Show Up →

thewayistare:

blackfoxx:

Dont fall in love with men who love white women. They dont know how to value black bodies.

Dont fall in love with men who cant see the fullness of your womanhood. They will treat you worse than a man.

Dont fall in love with men who cant see you as you want to be seen. You’ll become invisible.

Dont fall in love with men that you have to teach your humanity. Your voice will become hoarse.

Dont fall in love with men who take advantage of your honesty. He’ll try and strangle you with your own truth.

Dont fall in love with men who aren’t eager to hear what you have to say. He wont value the longings of your heart.

Dont fall in love with men who dont respect trans women, sex workers, poor women, and those women seen as Undesirables unworthy of male desire and care. What happens if you step outside the realm of his desire? Run from Men who make exceptions to womanhood.

Dont fall in love with men who always leave you feeling confused and unsure. They dont know themselves and cant know you.

Dont fall in love with men who are jaded and insecure. They will make you prove your love by hurting you.

Dont fall in love with men.

Dont fall in love.

Fall into the Abyss of Your Womanhood and love the man or person who enters thereafter….

I thought this was very well-written and informative.

I’m always saying “I’m sorry for what white people have done to you/continue to do to you” but I don’t always follow that with a solution to the problem at hand.

Time to change that.

Omg, I want to print this out and throw them everywhere, especially at school, so many people do these things and don’t understand that racism is at lot more subversive than someone just spewing racial slurs

Important. The first half were a lot of common ones I see online and in my daily life all the time. But the ones toward the end, that are more subtle and even pervade the (white) social justice community to some degree, made me reflect on myself too.

Number 8: “Bwame.” This list <3

Everyone needs a copy of this.

THIS IS MARRIAGE!!

Thats right!

Permission to be a bad ass. Nod.

He looks back at the guy like, “SEE THAT? SHE SAID YES. YOU’RE SO FUCKED.”

Like, guys. Sparta was so kick ASS sometimes when it came to women. Spartan women were given these small knives so that if their husbands came home and tried to hit them or assault them, they had a weapon within reach. That weapon was for CUTTING THEIR HUSBANDS’ FUCKING FACES so that when he went out in public everyone would know he was an asshole, abusing jerkface and they would publicly shame him.

I DID NOT KNOW THAT THAT IS GREAT

LET’S JUST TALK ABOUT SPARTAN WOMEN FOR A SECOND.

In Sparta, women could own land and were considered citizens. THAT IS A HUGE BIG FUCKING DEAL. Why? Because that was RARE AS FUCK and there are lots of places TODAY where women don’t even get that much.

Divorce was totally fine, and a woman could expect to keep her own wealth and get custody of the kids because paternal lineage wasn’t very important. And it didn’t make her a pariah! She could totally remarry, no big deal at all.

Spartan women participated in some fuckin’ badass sporting events, too. And because they were expected to be as physically fit as the Spartan menfolk (who all had to serve compulsory military duties, btw, and couldn’t marry until they finished them at thirty) they didn’t have time for lots of swishy dresses. So they wore notoriously short skirts. According to some accounts, their thighs were visible at all times. HOLY SHIT.

Also, In Sparta men only got their names on their graves if they died in battle. And women? Women only got their names on their graves if they died in childbirth. THE SPARTANS COMPARED CHILDBIRTH TO FUCKING BATTLE AND IT WAS VIEWED AS A GODDAMN BADASS AND HONORABLE WAY TO GO OUT.

FUCKING SPARTAN WOMEN. THIS DUDE HAD FUCKIN’ BETTER MAKE SURE SHE’S COOL WITH WHATEVER HE’S DOING, IF HE KNOWS WHAT’S FUCKIN’ GOOD FOR HIM.

And that’s not just any Spartan woman we’re talking about here. That right there is Gorgo of Sparta. If you don’t know about how fucking awesome and incredible this woman is then your life is a darker place.

Gorgo was outspoken, practical, and clever as fuck.

Plutarch writes of her  When asked by a woman from Attica, ‘Why are you Spartan women the only ones who can rule men?’, she said: ‘Because we are also the only ones who give birth to men.’

Pretty much the only other Spartan women we know by name is also because of her awesomeness: Cynisca, the first woman to win the Olympic Games.

like I don’t care that martin freeman was joking or being “tongue-in-cheek” or whatever

there is a fucking line and he crossed it

he’s been really nasty about elementary and so has all the sherlock cast and it’s just. give it a fucking rest.

not to mention a man insulting a woman’s appearance and calling her a DOG is just. hmmmm. hmmmmmmmm.

anybody who looks at martin freeman’s comments and sees only a man insulting a woman’s appearance is missing a huge part of the insulting overtones of his remarks

his comments are not just misogynistic

they are also, as a white man’s comments to an asian woman’s, racist, given the long history of white people comparing PoC to animals

Actually, I am too angry about this to put this only in tags.

Martin Freeman is not only a white man comparing Lucy Liu, an Asian woman, to a dog; he is a British man comparing Lucy Liu, a Chinese woman, to a dog.

The current shows that both of them are known for derive DIRECTLY from a source that was written during the Victorian period, WHICH IS you know, when the Opium Wars happened because the British didn’t want to pay for silk and tea and all the other stuff that China had that the British wanted.

And given that Sherlock’s most infamous episode is The Blind Banker, which is a direct throwback to the gross (in all senses of the word) racism of Victorian Britain, which starred cardboard Chinese villains, which killed off the Chinese woman (victim, because of course she needed white people to save her AND THEY FAILED ANYWAY), how fucking dare he.

It’s not ‘just a joke’, it can never be ‘just tongue-in-cheek’ when ALL THIS CONTEXT surrounds the situation, made even more volatile by the obvious disdain and frank unprofessionalism the cast and crew of Sherlock have directed towards Elementary.

doctorcanon:

Okay so the Hawkeye Initiative is wonderful, great, and empowering with a side of hilarious. I think it’s fantastic. Girl Nerds are finally getting their foot in the door and taking their share of the pie from this male dominated industry. Really it’s great and honestly, it’s about fucking time someone acknowledged the huge gap in a male nerd’s views of “Fake Nerd Girl”.

But…am I the only one who feels a bit sullied and unusual at the fact that most of the people getting recognition for this are White Females while POC(I hate that phrase btw but I’ll use it so all of you won’t jump on me at once - again) Gamers, male and female, are still left in the dark. We’re still considered “not real nerds”. Yes, even to Girl Gamers.

For instance, Luke Cage: Power Man didn’t even make it into the Avengers Movie. He had, what I’d like to believe as a brief cameo in Thor along with Hiemdoll that’s about a Black as the Marvel movies got. “Well, Whedon’s always had a problem with….blah blah blah…” I don’t care about that. Even on Tumblr, everyone loves the Black Widow, and that’s awesome. She was badass but Fury is reduced to…what…a nanny? Everyone gets a special gifset about how awesome they were  and Fury gets “and I swear in that moment we were motherfuckers” and an admittedly adorable comic about waking up the Avengers. Complete with pink apron. Even, “Hawkeye wasn’t useless, Fury was the useless one”. See what I mean?

Let me break it down even more. There at least three posts on how amazing Charlotte is in Princess in the Frog and how her friendship with Tiana was soooooo different and soooo sweet and it was Charlotte who really made the movie as great as it was. But the only post I’ve seen about Tiana is a picture of six different races in six different Disney movies where one isn’t labeled right and the other isn’t even real, and saying that those six characters out of fifty years of movies should’ve been enough. They even tried to justify it with Ariel and Eric’s relatioship, like “oh they aren’t even the same species look at that”. What?

Even further, tumblr continues to make joke posts making fun of people who wanted more diversity in Brave. “But it’s medieval Scotland! There weren’t exactly a lot of Black People!” Yeah well, I’m sure there weren’t a lot of PEOPLE TURNING INTO MAGICAL BEARS either but they managed to get that into the film, they could manage at least one dark-skinned person.

There’s even a post expressing surprise at Black people trading Yu-Gi-Oh cards after the poster assumed it was going to be a drug deal.

And don’t even get me started on the mounds of hate toward Doctor Who’s Martha Jones. Just….don’t.

While the progress that’s going on his great, I personally love the Superladies group pinup shot replaces with the Avengers. Carried away, my ass. I love, love, looooooooove it. But like a lot of social movements on this website, I felt like I was on the outside looking in. And yeah, I get that most of the characters that are being replaces with Hawkeye are, in fact white, and comics in general, especially lately, can be a bit strapped as far as racial diversity goes. But…no one seems to care about that part. And don’t tell me “well sometimes that’s the way it is” because you and I both know that that argument is bullshit.

So I know I got a bit long winded, but I just needed to put things into perspective. As an African American, or POC since saying a particular race seems to offend certain people, I’m just watching all of this progress go by and get further and further away from us. Oh, okay we’ll just wait here. Maybe if we wait five to ten years things like Blacknanimated or cosplayingwhileblack will get noticed too.

Anyways that’s my 2…more like 25…cents. I know no one’s been overtly racist and no one’s doing it on purpose. I’m not blaming anyone.  It just sucks to feel left out, you know?

Shut the fuck up. All us nice guys stuck in fucking friendzone know what you really want is some asshole to complain about to us. GTFO. We’re tired of it.

You sound super nice. I don’t know why no one wants to date you.

What a mystery.

I’ve had a bad day ok. I’ve pretty much given this girl, who I’m really close with, my heart and she shoots me down and starts telling me about all the guy problems. It just really fucking hurts and I felt here would be a better place to vent then some of my other options.

You know what? I know what it feels like to rejected. It fucking sucks and a lot of people are able to relate to what you’re feeling. You know what else I know? I know what it feels like to build a friendship with a guy. A guy that was nice and treated me like a human being instead of walking vagina he wants to fuck. I know what it’s like to become friends with a guy like this and slowly start to trust him. Slowly we build a really meaningful relationship and I let my guard down and I start to show him vulnerable parts of myself. I start to share my fears and weaknesses with him. I start relying on this important person in my life for support when I find out that I’m being dicked around by another guy who only sees me as a walking vagina he wants to fuck. And then this guy that I really care about tells me that he has feelings for me and when I tell him that  I don’t feel the same way, he turns around and calls me a bitch. He says I friendzoned him and he goes on some social networking site and starts blasting me and all of his friends are like “wow what a bitch. She doesn’t know what she’s missing” and he gets to pity himself and feel validated. I, on the other hand, am left with the realization that my friendship, that this closeness we shared didn’t mean jack shit. That this guy I trusted didn’t care enough about me as a person to not turn on me the second he found out I wouldn’t date/have sex with him. Suddenly, I’m feeling this whole time, everything I thought we had, was only as important to him as his chances to get in my pants. And let me tell you, that hurts way more than rejection.

Here’s the thing, buddy. You’re not just one guy who’s having a bad day because you had your heart broken. Browse the friend zone tag. You’re just one of the many guys that post things like  pictures that say “when a girl starts telling you about her problems, she’s not complaining. It means she trust you” and the caption says “Aaaannnd you’ve been friendzoned”  like having a platonic, meaningful relationship with a woman is just THE WORST FUCKING THING EVER. Do you know how shitty it feels to know that your friendship and your trust is so fucking undesirable that there’s a goddamn meme about it? Do you know how shitty it feels to know that your guy friends only care you as long as they can hold on to the possibility of one day fucking you? Do you know how infuriating it is to know that that guy, that asshole who made you think he cared about you as a person, gets to flame you for daring to not be attracted to him? Because if you don’t know what that feels like, let me tell you that you’re not the one who got the shit end of the deal.

definitely not pms. this is all true.

The perfect response.

Perfect response.

my friendship should be as awesome as any potential relationship.

: One billion jokes about misandry couldn't make up for or ease the pain, degradation, and death that Patriarchal systems... →

So when men come at me with messages like “you’re a bitch because you believe in misandry” or “you scare me with your misandry posts” I want you to know that I want you to be scared. Not because I want to wield some womanly power over you, but because I’m hoping that somewhere, deep down, it is starting to register with you that our dominating systems of power really hurt people.

I want you to realize that walking alone in public as a woman is terrifying.

I want you to realize that women are told to accept violence against them, by partners, by strangers, by the state.

I want you to realize that women are expected to participate in violence against themselves, through skin-bleaching, and dieting, and refusing to ask for help, and by being expected to love and respect people who oppress them.

Because trust me. The few seconds of pleasure I get out of making a misandry joke is quickly stripped away when I think about the time my boyfriend told me that when I told him “no” it meant “try harder” or when he said he got to decide if it was rape, not his partners, because we were in a relationship and sex was something he was entitled to as a member of that relationship.

It’s stripped away when I think about the time my mother’s husband forced me to drink vodka until I was sick on myself, laughed at me, and told me to clean myself up all because I had the nerve to voice the fact that I didn’t trust him.

It’s stripped away when I think about how, on their wedding night, he stole her car and all her money, bought drugs and hired prostitutes, and had the nerve to deny that my beautiful baby brother was his son when my mother got pregnant.

It’s stripped away when I think about all of the times I’ve been followed home by strange men.

It’s stripped away when I think about the men who have said that I should be grateful if they rape me, because no one could love a fat girl anyway.

It’s stripped away when my dad tells me the story of when he was a teenager and one of his best friends was offered a ride home, but instead, she was brutally raped and murdered.

And fuck you if you say “not all men are like that.” Because the only thing that phrase does is inadvertently defend the men who are like that. It’s a way of shielding men who harm women, in the smallest and biggest of ways, and I’m sick of it. There is no excuse for harming women because they are women. Never. Ever. Never
